The Kray strain is now believed to have vanished completely except in Bahrain, where it has been considered as precious as a family heirloom.

It often happened that a horse was named after its master and in this way a ‘ new strain ‘ was born. But rare was the occasion that a man was called after his horse as in the case of the Kray.

In one of the battles fought on horseback in East Riffa one of the members of the Al-Khalifa family, Shaikh Mohammed, was mounted on a Kray mare. Kray had been both fierce and brave , so her opponents tried to eliminate her from the battle. They eventually succeeded. When she fell, her rider Mohammed fell with her and was trapped underneath with a broken leg – thus he became an easy target and was killed by his adversary. Today the descendants of this particular Shaikh are identified in this manner, Shaikh Ali bin Ahmed bin Abdulla bin Ahmed bin Mohmmed, Master of Kray.

This exceptionally rare strain was very briefly lost to the Royal Arabian stud but still existed in the care of some private breeders.

The great vision of HM The King Sh. Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa and a noble gesture from one of the private breeders has ensured the resurrection of this precious family.

Kray Asila 1242 returned to the land of her forefathers and God willing will create a dynasty of her own of this priceless strain.
